JUNIOR WOMEN’S SABRE REPORT

France’s Amalia Aime claimed the final individual Junior title in Novi Sad today finishing on top of the Women’s Sabre field of 61.

She dropped one fight in the first round meaning a ranking of 11 for the knockout stages. That earned her a bye through the round of 64 and she went on to beat Emma Neikova (BUL) 15-5, Manuela Spica (ITA) 15-8 and Vlada Plekhanova 15-8 to make the top four. She faced her hardest test in the semi-final but prevailed 15-12 over Sugar Katinka Battai (HUN).

The other half of the draw saw a semi-final contest between Felice Herbon (GER) and Nisanur Erbil (TUR) which the Turkish fencer won 15-7.

Aime started the final the sharper of the two fencers and quickly went 4-0 up. Erbil suddenly came to life drawing level at 6-6 before taking a narrow 8-7 lead into the break. Erbil began the second period with a confident parry riposte and then controlled the fight off the line to lead 11-7 before a technical break disturbed her momentum. When the fencers returned they both launched themselves off the line, forcing the referee to review the replay system on multiple occasions. Each time Aime was the one to get the call and at 13-13 the French fencer had turned the match for the second time. She went on to claim the title 15-13.

The result means that each of the Junior individual titles was won by a different nation.
