Hungary’s Emese Domonkos claims the third gold medal of the European Cadet Fencing Championship first day in the women’s sabre event.
Entering the day ranked 8th in a field of 66 competitors, Domonkos also advanced to the direct elimination ranked 8 after dropping one bout in the pool round. She got a BYE through the round of 64 and then went on to beat Damla Demirkol (TUR) 15-8, teammate Nadin Toth (HUN) 15-11 and Alexandra Kuvaeva (GEO) 15-6 to secure her spots in the medal rounds. The opponent in the semi-final was 4th-ranked Anastasia Fusea (ROU), but Domonkos won also this bout with a score of 15-11.
From the lower side of the bracket came Amalia Covaliu (ROU), who was ranked third after the pools. She defeated Nehir Yildrim (TUR) 15-8, Mariela Georgieva (BUL) 15-10 and 6th-ranked Viktoria Korotchenko (UKR) 15-10 to advance to the semi-finals. It was an even bout against Aurore Patrice (FRA) but Covaliu came out on top with 15-13 to face Domonkos in the grand final.
Domonkos fenced convincingly from the start of the final, securing herself a five-point lead (8-3) going into the break. Covaliu came out stronger in the second half and managed to reduce the lead to just two points. From there on, however, Domonoks re-seized command of the bout and after four consecutive hits had brought the result to 14-8 in favor of the Hungarian. Domonkos eventually finished the match 15-10 and claimed her first individual European title, adding to her team gold from Novi Sad in 2022.
