With the individual fencing events concluded, it is now time for the team fencing to enter Tauron arena.
First up is the women’s team foil competition which is set to being at 09:00. 13 teams will battle it out not only for the medals of the European Games 2023 Krakow-Malopolska, but also for valuable points in the race for Olympic qualification. The big favourite of the competition is the Italian team who has dominated women’s foil for the past decade. The reigning world and European champions are missing veteran Ariana ERRIGO (ITA), but led by world no. 4 Alice Volpi they look poised to take the victory. They will face strong competition from reigning silver medalists and world no. 3 France, led by reigning world champion Ysaora THIBUS (FRA). The Polish team will certainly also be in contention for gold, led by 2023 European Games champion Julia WALCZYK-KLIMASZYK (POL).
An hour later, at 10:00, the men’s sabre team event is scheduled to start. Among the 16 teams competing for the win, world no. 2 Hungary is the biggest favourite. Led by fencing legend Aron SZILAGYI (HUN), the Hungarians are the reigning world champions and vice-European champions. Their biggest competitor is Italy, world no. 3 and reigning world bronze medalists. Despite a disappointing performance in the individual event, the Italian sabre fencers are know for their strong will and will surely put up a fight. Two other teams worth mentioning are world no. 5 Germany, who come to this championship with a squad of young fencers, and world no. 7 France, led by individual world no. 4 Maxime PIANFETTI (FRA) and world no. 6 Bolade APITHY (FRA). The Polish enter the competition only as the 21st seed, but they have Krzysztof KACZKOWSKI’s silver medal fresh in mind, alongside the home support.
