World Championships 2021 Report – Day 3 Team Sabre
Day three of the Cadet & Junior World Championships saw the conclusion of the sabre events with Egypt winning their first gold medal.
Egypt’s Junior Men’s Sabre team (Elaraby, Marouf & Moataz with in Nofal reserve) beat Russia (Nasanov, Terekhov & Tyulyukov with Khalimbekov in reserve) 45-38 in the gold medal match. The delight of the host nation was measured due to the global pandemic but notable.
France (Boureau, Jarry & Pogu with Glenadel in reserve) beat the USA (Linder, McBride & Walker with Vidovszky in reserve) 45-41 in the bronze medal play-off.
In the women’s event, individual Junior Champion, Jeon Hayoung led Korea (Jang, Jeon & Lee with Park in reserve) to the women’s team sabre title. An impressive start saw Korea lead the USA (Greenbaum, Johnson & Kim with Anglade in reserve – who came on in the match) 15-4 after three legs of nine. Despite an impressive fightback from individual Cadet silver medalist Kim in the penultimate leg, Korea took the World title 45-31.
Romania (Iacob, Matei & Pantis with Chitu in reserve) took the bronze medal, beating Turkey (Cakir, Erbil & Undulag with Kerkeser in reserve) 45-40 in the play-off.
