Today, the FIE announced the news that everyone has been waiting for – the dates and locations of the final Olympic qualification events in all disciplines. They are:
- 10-14 March: Men’s and Women’s Sabre World Cups in Budapest, Hungary
- 19-23 March: Men’s and Women’s Epee World Cups in Kazan, Russia
- 26-28 March: Men’s and Women’s Foil Grand Prix in Doha, Qatar
A letter signed by FIE President, Alisher Usmanov, said, “Following on from discussions and work with a number of federations and as some organisers had to renounce, the Executive Committee has decided to optimize the organisation of these events and to minimize the travels for federations. As a result, each weapon (both men and women) will be held in one country and the dates have been slightly revised.”
The statement went on to say that the FIE will be providing support of 900,000CHF to cover these events. The money will not only go towards the Covid-19 testing protocol being employed but also to cover additional accommodation costs that will be incurred.
