The Hungarian team - Blanka Virag Nagy, Greta Gachalyi, Lotti Horvath and Hanna Terhes - had seed 1 entering the day and certainly lived up to their rank. After a BYE in the round of 32 the Hungarians comfortably beat Latvia 45-19 and Romania 45-26 to reach the semi-finals. The match against France in the semi-final turned out to be a tough nut to crack, but after impressive fencing in bout 8 and 9 the Hungarians turned a two-point deficit into a two-point win 45-43 to advance to the finals.
The other finalist, Poland - Antonia Halemba, Aleksandra Szymanska, Magda Ratyna and Oliwią Janeczek - had a tougher road. Ranked 11 entering the competition, they battled through Azerbaijan 44-35, 6th-ranked Spain 45-38 and 3rd-ranked Turkey 45-37 to reach the semi-final. In the semi-final the Polish took an early lead against the 2nd-seeded Ukranian team - Anna Maksymenko, Emili Conrad, Ustina Ohon and Polina Spyrydonoa - to eventually win 44-34 and advance to the final.
The grand final was never really close as the Hungarians took an early lead and kept extending it in every bout. Solid fencing across the board took Hungary over the finish line 45-39 to pick up the 5th gold for Hungary in these championships.
The bronze match was a closer affair and Ukraine eventually secured the medal with a score 40-39 after a win in the priority period.
