Poland’s Adam Jakubowski beat Sweden’s Marcus Broberg to secure his first individual European medal, adding to the silver medal in the Team Competition from Novi Sad 2022.
Jakubowski, ranked 19th in the world, started the day by winning 5/6 matches in the pool to secure the 8th seed in the direct elimination. After a BYE in the round of 128, Jakubowski had a series of convincing victories against Koen Walet (NED) 15-6, Christopher Horn Nielsen (DEN) 15-7, Raian Adoul (ITA) 15-11 to reach the quarterfinal. There he faced 1st seed Eliot Chagnong (FRA) and won a tough battle 15-14. To reach the final, Jakubowski defeated Albert Bagdany (HUN) 15-12.
Sweden’s Marcus Broberg, ranked 65th in the world, displayed a remarkable performance to secure his first individual championship medal. After winning 5/6 matches in the pools, the 15th ranked Broberg had a BYE through the round of 128. He reached the semifinal, securing Sweden’s first-ever junior European foil medal, after a line of impressive victories over Maksims Bogdans (LAT) 15-3, Yelyzar Dyrda (UKR) 15-5, 2nd seed David Sosnov (GBR) 15-10 and Bastian Kappus (GER) 15-10. In the semifinals, Broberg beat Niklas Diestelkamp (GER) 15-5 for a chance at the gold medal.
Both fencers were eager to win the gold medal as evidenced by the 23 touches scored in the first period, sending the two combatants to the break with a 12-11 lead in favor of Jakubowski. Broberg eventually clawed his way back to 13-13, but Jakubowski got the upper hand and won 15-13 to take the Junior Men’s Foil title, Poland’s second gold in the championships.
