World Championships 2021 Report – Day 4 Junior Foil
Russia’s Zakhar Kozlov took the Junior Men’s Foil World title today in Cairo, Egypt on day four of the Championships. The strict Covid-bubble did nothing to deter the relatively unknown Russian dominating a tough final against Choi Dongyun on Korea, winning 15-9.
Kozlov started the day well winning all but one of his first-round matches and ranking twenty-second for the elimination rounds. He beat one of the favourites for the tournament Armand Spichiger of France on route to the semi-finals. He went on to overcome another French fencer, Constant Roger 15-8 to make the final. Choi was always going to be a tough opponent in the final, having dominated throughout the day but a determined Kozlov took the title 15-9. Roger shared third place with Russia’s Stepan Martynovich.
The USA’s May Tieu claimed the Women’s Junior Foil crown, beating Nicole Pustilnik of Israel 15-12 in the final. Jessica Guo of Canada and Korea’s Joo Yeongji shared the bronze medal position.
The Championships continues tomorrow with the Cadet foil events.
