The first day in Foggia

Foggia 2019 Cadet and Junior European Fencing Championship starts with a smile for Apulian fencing thanks to the bronze medal gained by Gaia Pia Carella in sabre under 17.
Supported by the local spectators' enthusiasm, the athlete, born in San Giovanni Rotondo (a little village near Foggia), ASD Champ Napoli member, debuted 15-9 against the belarus athlete Alisiya Malazhavaya, then overcame the hungarian Katinka Battai Sugar with a beautiful come back culminated 15-13 and in quarter finals defeated the ukrainian Sofiya Golovkina 15-10. In semi-finals found the turkish Nisanur Erbil, in a state of grace indeed, who dominated 15-5 and after, would have won the gold medal at the end of an amazing final with the russian Zinyukhina, closed with 15-13 final score.

Gaia Carella stated glowing after the award ceremony: "Winning a gold medal in my own land is a joy beyond words! I want to thank for this extraordinary result my Coach Gigi Tarantino and everyone who believed in me. Now I am already thinking of the team competition next Monday with my teammates when I hope to improve this bronze. The aim for the future? A medal at World Championship".
