WOMEN’S TEAM EPEE EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP TAKEN BY ROMANIA

U23 WOMEN’S TEAM EPEE REPORT

Romania claimed the final team title on the penultimate day of the U23 European Championships as Bianca Benea, Cristina Constantinescu, Talida Enache and Alexandra Predescu collected the Women’s Team Epee gold.

Top seeds, the Romanian quartet followed a bye through the round of 16 with victories over Ukraine 45-22 and Germany 45-38 to secure their place in the final. Switzerland took the other semi-final 43-38 against France. Germany (Lara Goldmann, Viktoria Hilbrig, Klara Jaskulla and Laura Wetzker) led France throughout the bronze medal play-off claiming third place on the podium with a 45-39 victory.

Switzerland began the final with Angelina Favre, Aurore Favre and Virgina Romeo with Fiona Hatz in reserve whilst Romania had Enache on the bench. Switzerland edge the first period 8-7 and led 24-23 going into the final third of the title decider. With the scores tied at 32-32 going into the ninth and final leg Benea went on a scoring spree for Romania and claimed the title 44-41.
