This weekend we had individual and team events of the first FIE World Cup. The season started very well,with many surprises and confirmations. From Alger to Bonn, going through Bern and Tallinn, the fencers performed excellently.
SABRE
ALGER (ALG)
Sabre started the competition on 10 November with the pool and preliminary direct elimination of female and male individual events. On 11 November, the women’ssabre started the world cup season with the T64 direct elimination. Martin-Portugues won the Alger World Cup. After winning the match with Maxwell Caitlin, the Spanish fencer overcame Michela Battiston 15-12. The other semi-finalist fencers were Theodora Gkontura and Sara Balzer. The men’s champion in Alger was Sandro Bazadze; in the final he overcame Luigi Samele. Congratulations to the other two semi-finalists Apithy Bolade and Elsissy Ziad, for his first World Cup medal.
The Team competition was won by the French women’s team, composed of Sara Balzer, Caroline Queroli, Cecilia Berder,and Margaux Rifkiss, which has confirmed their first place in the ranking. The Italian team reached second place, lost 45-44 to the France team, and the Korean team achieved third place.
The story has changed for the men’s team event. The Korean team hadan excellent performance. They won the competition, but a surprise was also made by Iran, who, after overcoming Germany (third place), were defeated only by Do Gyeongdong, Oh Sanguk and Gu Bongil 45-34.

TALLINN(EST)
In the Women’s Epee World Cup, first place has been achievedby Alberta Santuccio, who has started very well this season. The Italian girl, number 8 in the FIE ranking, has won her second World Cup after the Budapest Grand Prix of last season. The French fencer Candassamy Marie-Florence made the second place, who, after a good 2021-2022 season, has lost only with Santuccio in the final 15-11. The third places were achieved by the Chinese girl Zhu Mingye and the current World Champion Song Sera.
The team event was excellent. Italy has won the first team world Cup competition of the 2022-2023 season (Alberta Santuccio is coming back home with two gold medals), beating in the final the Ukrainian team, who beat Korea, which is the first classified in FIE ranking and is the current team World Champion. France achieved 3rd position, confirming their world FIEranking position.
BERN (SUI)
The winner of the men´s epee World Cup is Andrasfi Tibor who has beaten 12-11 Rodriguez John Edison. Tibor has made his first victory in a World Cup. Kano Koki, 5th in the world ranking, and the 24 years old French fencer Midelton Luidgi are the third classified. It was an event rich in “first medal,” we are waiting to see the other competitions; the forecasts are exciting.
The team World Champion in Cairo won the team competition. France has confirmed the excellent performance of the last season, ending with 3rd place in the European Championships in Antalya and 1st place in World Championship. Cannone, Borel, Bardere,and Jerent won the day, getting over the Korean team 45-41 in the final. The 3rd classification was the Hungarian team, after overcoming the Italian team, lost to the Korean one.
FOIL
BONN(GER)
Japan's national anthem was played in Bonn thanks to Matsuyama Kyosuke. In the final, Alessio Foconi surrendered to him 15-11. Matsumayama before the Itafencer overcame the world champion Enzo Lefort in the semi-final. Marcus Mepstead , Great Britain’s fencer, is the other bronze medallist.
The team event was won by the second team in the FIE ranking. The USA surprised in the final the first team in the world ranking , the Italian team, 45-40. Third place was achieved by the current Olympic Team Champion, the French team, who, after their defeat against the USA, beat Japan into 4th place.
