MASSIVE ATTENDANCE AT SECOND SEMINAR
The EFC hosted the second of three SEMI webinars at the weekend with attendance close to 90. The project is being led by EFC Commission Member, Etienne Van Cann who welcomed the delegates before handing over for a formal introduction from Pascal Tesch, a former Chair of the Commission.
He focused on how the responsibilities of Weapon Control are centred on providing an equal opportunity for all competitors and teams. “Whilst we cannot have friends, we must also not have enemies. Our guide is the FIE rule book and it is our responsibility to stick to it rigidly.”
Desmond Gilhooly took over the presentation and covered how to set up a Weapon Control area and Call Room. His detailed presentation included design maps of successful set ups from previous European Championships, emphasising the need for planning at the earliest possibility and creating a logical progression for athletes and equipment.
Martina Zmaic continued the webinar with a focus on behaviours and interactions with athletes and coaches. She highlighted that whilst Weapon Control could be a hectic and stressful place for armourers, it is also the same for the participants. Key elements to successful Weapon Controls included empathy and a multi-lingual team.
The final segment covered the Publicity Code and specific rules for Wheelchair Fencing. Peter Huggins hosted that session and with his years of experience in control areas at major international events, he covered a great deal of content in a short space of time. Of particular interest was the knowledge that he imparted regarding the difference between manufacturer marks and advertising.
The final SEMI webinar in this first series will take place on 12 June and is open to all interested parties.
