Roman Svichkar and Sarah Noutcha triumph in Genova
Men’s Épée: A Golden Day for Ukraine
Day two of the European Fencing Championships in Genova delivered intense and emotional moments, starting with the men's épée competition. Ukraine’s Roman Svichkar climbed to the top of the podium after a day of solid performances, tactical brilliance, and focused determination.
The silver medal went to Matteo Galassi of Italy, just 20 years old and competing in his first ever Senior European Championships. Fencing on home soil, Galassi showed why he is considered one of Italy’s brightest prospects, mixing courage and flair to reach the final.
Bronze was shared between Gergely Siklósi of Hungary — who already celebrated one victory and another podium this season on the World Cup tour — and the experienced Italian Andrea Santarelli, well known for his diverse tactical repertoire and precise timing.
Women’s Sabre: Redemption for Noutcha
In the afternoon, the women’s sabre event brought more thrilling stories, with Sarah Noutcha of France rising to the occasion. Last year, she had narrowly missed the semifinals, losing by a single touch and finishing sixth. This year, however, she returned to the piste with a clear goal and impressive determination — and it paid off with a well-deserved gold medal.
Ukrainian Alina Komashchuk took silver after a remarkable day of fencing, coached from the tribune by none other than Olympic champion Olga Kharlan. The duo, who shared Olympic team gold last summer, once again proved to be a winning combination — all the way to the final.
The two bronze medals were awarded to Sylwia Matuszak of Poland and Battai Sugár Katinka of Hungary, both of whom fenced with power and elegance throughout the day, confirming their place among Europe’s sabre elite.
