Klagenfurt, Bratislava and Zestaponi Highlight a Weekend of Young European Fencing

European Circuit Spreads Across the Continent

The third weekend of October brought the European fencing community together once again, with competitions held in Klagenfurt (Austria) and Bratislava–Šamorín (Slovakia). From sabre and epee to foil across cadet and U14 categories, the weekend offered an excellent opportunity for young fencers to gain experience, refine their technique, and test their form in the early phase of the season.

Cadet Circuit in Klagenfurt

The Cadet Circuit in Klagenfurt gathered a strong international field in both men’s and women’s epee. The individual events saw high-level performances, with American fencers taking top honours while European athletes secured several podium spots.

In the men’s epee, Christopher Davoodian (United States) took the gold after a strong performance, with his teammate Alan Lam finishing second. The bronze medals went to Lorenzo Balelli (Italy) and Eitan Efraim Charmatski (Israel).

In the women’s epee, Vivian Young (United States) won the event, followed by Lotti Horváth (Hungary) in second place. The third positions were shared by Ekaterina Seregin (United States) and Johanna Kurtinecz (Romania).

Team events completed the competition programme. In the men’s epee team category, the gold medal went to United States of America 4 (Christopher Davoodian, Alan Lam, Andrew Zheng, Nathaniel Kim), silver to Israel (Eitan Efraim Charmatski, Arbel Horowitz, Daniel Zadka, Ben Sapir), and bronze to Hungary (Dominik Palágyi, Patrik Dvorszki, Milán Tóth, Zsombor Orosz).

In the women’s epee team event, the podium was fully American. United States of America 2 (Vivian Young, Samantha Liu, Chelsea Kim, Isabelle Luan) took gold, United States of America 4 (Ekaterina Seregin, Sophie Yao, Ashley Zhang, Lauren Tang) earned silver, and United States of America 3 (Alyssa Fang, Chloe Park, Danielle Lim, Rachel Chen) secured bronze.

Italian Dominance in Bratislava

On Sunday, the Eurofence League continued in Bratislava–Šamorín, where foilists from several countries met on the piste. The event highlighted the growing level of competition in Central Europe and confirmed the solid form of the Italian delegation.

In the men’s foil, Emanuele Iaquinta (Italy) took gold ahead of Louis Guennou (Great Britain). The bronze medals went to Marco Panazzolo and Raian Adoul, both from Italy.

The women’s foil event saw a complete Italian podium. Elisabetta Bianchin secured the top spot, followed by Mariavittoria Elvira Berretta in second place, while Ludovica Franzoni and Greta Saioni shared third.

U14 Circuit in Zestaponi

The youngest category of the European Circuit competed in Zestaponi, Georgia, where U14 fencers in sabre gathered for another important stage of the season. The results of the event are currently being finalised and will be added soon to complete the overview of this fencing weekend.

Farewell Moment in Dublin

During the Dublin FIE Satellite tournament, the Irish organisers took a moment to honour a respected figure on the international refereeing scene. Dublin didn’t let him leave without applause — and a cake.

Because this weekend wasn’t just another competition: it marked Daniel Buchs’ final time refereeing at the Dublin Épée Satellite. He is not retiring yet and will continue until the end of the season, but this Irish chapter deserved a special farewell.

Thank you, Daniel, for the calm in the chaos, the consistency in every decision, and the passion you bring to every event.

Building Momentum for the Season Ahead

With competitions taking place in Austria and Slovakia, and the U14 stage in Georgia soon to be updated, the European Circuit continues to offer valuable competitive opportunities for young fencers. The diversity of nations and the quality of fencing on display underline once again the strength and unity of the European fencing community.
