29 February 2024

The European Fencing Confederation had the privilege of sitting down for an insightful interview with Huseynova Samira, a newly minted referee from Azerbaijan, who is making her debut at the European Championships. Formerly an epee athlete turned coach for young talents achieving commendable results, Samira has seamlessly transitioned into the realm of refereeing.

Samira's journey to officiating at the European Championships has been noteworthy. Over the past two years, she honed her skills by refereeing at cadet circuits before deciding to rigorously prepare for the referee exam. With guidance from experienced referee Fikret Valiyev, also from Azerbaijan, Samira emphasizes the importance of thorough preparation and a responsible approach in achieving success in the exam.

When asked about her experience stepping into the world of refereeing, Samira shared both positive and negative aspects. Viewing refereeing as a positive experience providing a new perspective on fencing from a coach's standpoint, she acknowledges the dual responsibility she holds when adjudicating matches. Samira highlights the need for emotional control and a clear mindset to approach each fencing bout with fairness and integrity.

Reflecting on challenges faced as a female referee, Samira admits to initial difficulties in establishing authority but has since evolved into a more confident and responsible official with each decision she makes. Drawing parallels between refereeing and piloting, she stresses the zero-margin for error and the critical need for precision and accountability in every call made.

In moments of adversity, Samira's mantra is “breathe in and breathe out”, which underscores her unwavering focus and determination to make split-second decisions without hesitation. Despite attempts by athletes to influence her decisions, Samira prides herself on maintaining independence and professionalism while fostering a respectful atmosphere on the piste.

Samira's first visit to Italy for the European Championships has been a welcoming experience, resonating with her Azerbaijani roots due to cultural similarities. The Italian environment makes her feel at home, and she expressed that she could see herself living in Italy.

In conclusion, Huseynova Samira's journey as a novice female referee exemplifies dedication, resilience, and the unwavering pursuit of excellence in the sport of fencing. With a growing sense of confidence, responsibility, and integrity, Samira continues to make her mark in the competitive world of fencing officiating, embodying the spirit of fair play and professionalism on and off the piste.
