Tension and Teamwork Define First Team Finals

GENOVA, 17 June 2025 — The opening day of team events at the European Fencing Championships in Genova delivered the kind of drama only team fencing can offer. With national pride on the line in front of an enthusiastic crowd, Italy claimed victory in women’s foil, while Hungary stood strongest in men’s sabre.

Women’s Foil: Italy Survives French Comeback
In women’s foil, Italy captured their seventh European title since 2015 — but this one was far from routine. Fencing in front of a home audience, the Italian squad entered the day as favourites, but the journey was anything but smooth. From the opening match to the final bout, they faced resistance at every step.

The gold medal match against France began with strong momentum for Italy, who built up a considerable lead. However, in a stunning twist, the French team came back in the last two relays, erasing the gap and forcing the match into a priority minute. It was Arianna Errigo who landed the decisive touch, giving Italy the narrowest of victories. France had to settle for silver, while Spain, showing determination and consistency throughout the day, secured the bronze medal.

Men’s Sabre: Hungary's Composure Secures Gold
The men’s sabre event brought a different kind of energy — faster, more explosive, but no less tactical. Hungary, silver medallists at the Paris Olympic Games last summer, confirmed their status as one of the sport’s leading teams. With a blend of experience and youthful courage, they fenced with exceptional composure and unity.

The youngest member of the squad, Rabb, took on the anchor role and managed to finish every match with confidence and control, including the final against Italy. The host nation, backed by loud support, showed strong form and earned the silver medal after a solid day of performances. AIN, returning to team competition for the first time since 2022, impressed with a bold, physical, and confident showing that carried them to the bronze.

Looking Ahead: New Titles on the Line Tomorrow

The team competitions continue on 18 June with two more events on the schedule. Men's épée will begin at 09:00, while women’s sabre is scheduled to start at 11:40. The day will conclude with the team finals at 17:30, where two more champions will be crowned.
