Anna Maksymenko’s Historic Triumph in Budapest

Seventeen-year-old Anna Maksymenko of Ukraine delivered a breathtaking performance at the Budapest Epee Grand Prix, clinching her first career gold medal on March 16 at the BOK Hall. Her victory marks a historic moment for Ukrainian fencing, securing the country's first Grand Prix title since 2020 and its first epee gold at this level since 2013.

Maksymenko’s path to glory saw her overcome Canada’s Leonora MacKinnon with a commanding 15:9 victory in the semifinals. The final posed an even greater challenge as she faced Italy’s Giulia Rizzi, a Paris 2024 Olympic team champion. Trailing 9:11 in the decisive period, Maksymenko demonstrated remarkable composure, equalizing with just 30 seconds remaining. In a moment of sheer brilliance, she executed a perfectly timed counterattack, sealing a dramatic 12:11 victory and etching her name into the history of the sport.

This Grand Prix triumph adds to an already stellar season for Maksymenko. Just weeks earlier, at the European Junior Championships in Antalya, she dominated the Junior Women’s Épée event, securing gold. She had already made a statement by winning both the cadet individual and team titles earlier in the competition.

The European fencing community cheered Maksymenko’s outstanding performance, celebrating her achievement as a testament to the strength and depth of European talent in the sport. Hopefully the success of young European fencers like Maksymenko will inspire the next generation, reinforcing the continent’s prominence in the world of fencing.
