In light of the challenges that 2023 has presented, the President of the EFC Giorgio Scarso has penned a heartfelt letter addressing all members of the European fencing world. This official letter serves as an invitation for reflection on the events that have unfolded throughout the year and an opportunity to unite as a community. Join us as we explore the President's words and delve into the important message they convey.
“I address the world of European fencing, whether they be executives, coaches, athletes, families of athletes, or fencing enthusiasts, to invite them to reflect on what has been done in 2023: it has been a particularly difficult year, but thanks to everyone's commitment, we have managed to overcome the difficulties, although a wound remains within Europe, a wound that I hope will heal as soon as possible.
There have been many activities that European fencing has implemented, and this should be seen as a success, both because we have overcome the aforementioned difficulties and because we have honored the Confederation.
Both in the Senior World Championships and in the Youth World Championships, as well as in the Grand Prix events and the World Cups, both senior and junior, European athletes have demonstrated the value and ability that our Confederation expresses, and we should all be proud of that.
Special thanks go to the athletes who bring the name of Europe high, thanks that should be extended to the coaches, to the executives of each Federation, not forgetting the families of the athletes, who with their sacrifices allow the youngest ones to take their first steps at the national level and subsequently in Europe, and then become leading actors on the world stage.
I want to conclude this greeting by thanking the referees, the various commissions, as well as the Executive Committee of the Confederation: I firmly believe that without their contribution, there couldn't be a "European fencing system" capable of setting the guidelines for world fencing.
As the holiday season approaches, I take this opportunity to extend my warmest wishes for a peaceful Christmas and a prosperous 2024 to all those who work within our Confederation, a year that will surely lead us to the Olympics in Paris and, I hope, towards peace in Europe.
Giorgio Scarso
(President of the European Fencing Confederation)
