The European Fencing Confederation (EFC) has played a crucial role in enhancing the development of fencing across Europe, particularly by nurturing young talents from emerging federations. Montenegro, a recently established fencing federation (established at the end of 2023), achieved a significant milestone when its athlete, Filip Duraskovic, participated in the European Youth Championships for the first time. This accomplishment was made possible, in part, by the support of the EFC's Solidarity program.
In preparation for the European Championships, the EFC's organizing committee arranged a specialized camp for young athletes from federations seeking growth opportunities. Athletes from countries such as Armenia, Montenegro, Cyprus, Lithuania, and North Macedonia came together with the common goal of enhancing their fencing skills and readiness for the upcoming European Championships. The camp aimed to offer these young fencers valuable training and exposure to various technical aspects, all with the aim of fostering a united fencing community among the federations.
Filip Duraskovic, a promising talent from Montenegro, embraced the opportunity provided by the Solidarity Program. After participating in the preparatory camp, Filip embarked on his journey to the European Youth Championships. Despite facing tough competition, Filip's determination and passion for the sport shone through as he embraced the tournament's excitement and aimed to make his mark on the fencing scene.
In a candid discussion, Filip shared his impressions of the solidarity camp, emphasizing the camaraderie, intense sparring sessions, and the friendships he formed during the experience. His resilience and love for the sport were evident as he expressed his eagerness to continue attending such camps, compete in more tournaments, and ultimately achieve his dream of representing Montenegro at the Olympic Games.
Driving Filip's remarkable journey is his father, Dejan Duraskovic, the president and the only licensed coach in Montenegro, serving as a driving force behind fencing development in the country. With a background in kendo and a decade of experience in fencing, Dejan's vision to empower young athletes through fencing has materialized in clubs like Budućnost in Podgorica, as well as two other clubs in Tivat and Bar. Despite facing challenges related to limited equipment and resources, the fencing community in Montenegro remains resilient and proactive in their developmental pursuits.
By means of programs like the Solidarity program, talented athletes from nations such as Montenegro have been provided with the platform to refine their skills and promote a spirit of unity within the fencing realm. Filip Duraskovic's story epitomizes the perseverance, enthusiasm, and commitment that propel athletes towards achievement. His participation in the solidarity camp, alongside the unwavering encouragement of his father, Dejan Duraskovic, paints a touching picture of resolve and ambition within Montenegro's fencing community.
