COMEX Meeting of the EFC 20.02.2024

20 February 2024

The latest meeting of the Executive Committee of the European Fencing Confederation (COMEX) held on 20th February 2024 saw crucial decisions and discussions taking place, covering a variety of key topics essential for the development and organization of fencing in the region.

The treasurer provided an update on the financial aspects of the EFC, including cash balances and the overall economic situation. Positive results were highlighted, demonstrating effective financial management.

Some organization questions were raised and discussed by the technical secretariat composed of the technical management head of EFC, technical director, assistant, and a representative from the COMEX - the competition committee referent.

Programs aimed at improving competitive activities were examined, focusing on a range of activities: the importance of athletes' behavior, clothing, and attitude at competitions to present a positive image of fencing competitions from attire to demeanor.

Planning for the elective congress scheduled for 14th September in Budapest was discussed, along with deadlines for candidate submissions.

Additionally, preparations for the Olympic qualification championships in Luxembourg were addressed, with a focus on resolving referee participation issues. Alternative names have been proposed to the FIE due to two assigned referees withdrawing their participation. The matter will be raised with the international federation's executive committee for the Luxembourg event.

Plans for the European Cadet, Youth, U23, and Senior Championships in 2025 were discussed. Genoa has been approved as the host city for the European Senior Championships, while Antalya and Tallinn emerged as potential hosts for the Cadet and Youth Championships. Final decisions regarding the host cities for the Cadet and Junior European Championships 2025 will be made after gathering additional information on their organizational capabilities.

Efforts were made to secure financial support from local authorities for the European Youth Fencing Festival aimed at U14 athletes, emphasizing the importance of community collaboration. The president was asked to contact local authorities to explore potential financial support for the festival.

The committee approved a plan outlining FIE assistance to federations regarding equipment, ensuring continuous support for member associations.

Continuation of the Solidarity Program, aimed at providing opportunities for federations lacking technicians to participate in training courses, is ongoing. A separate communication will be issued on this matter to improve organizational efficiency with the help of federations.

The date for the next COMEX meeting was set for Basel during the upcoming European Senior Championships, ensuring continuity in decision-making processes.

The meeting concluded with a comprehensive report from Julius Kralik, the sports director, on the activities of the 2023-2024 Cadet season, highlighting the widespread participation and success of over 8000 U17 fencers from 32 European and 31 non-European countries in the Cadet European Circuit. EFC is incredibly proud of this success as the cadet circuit has become a training ground for all U17 athletes worldwide.

The evening concluded with a visit to the Mayor of Naples, officially inaugurating the European Fencing Championships set to commence on 22nd February 2024, further strengthening the strong ties between the sport of fencing and the local community.
