Polish gold in Women’s Epee Team Competition

Team Poland – Cecylia Cieslik, Alicja Klasik, Gloria Klughardt and Kinga Zgryzniak – battled through 18 teams to claim the gold medal in Women’s Epee, the third of Poland in Tallinn.

Entering the competition ranked first in the world, Poland had a BYE in the round of 32. They went on to defeat Türkey 45-30, Switzerland 45-31 and Great Britain 43-39 in the semi-final to reach the grand final.

Their opponents, 3rd ranked France – Juliette Baudinot, Anaelle Doquet, Oceane Francillonne and Elena Seille - had a BYE through the round of 32. They then defeated Estonia 45-28, Hungary 45-43 and reigning world champions Israel 45-43 to advance to the final.

Initially, the final was an even affair and after the first third France led 10-9. After winning two consecutive bouts 5-0 and 3-0, however, Poland pulled ahead and eventually won the match 40-32 to secure the gold medal. In the bronze match, Israel – Adele Bogdanov, Nicole Feygin, Alexandra Kravets and Sophia Vainberg - came out on top 45-41 against Great Britain to secure the third-place medal.
