BUDAHAZY CLAIMS EUROPEAN TITLE IN NOVI SAD

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS CADET MEN’S FOIL REPORT

Hungary claimed gold and silver in the Cadet Men’s Foil event in Novi Sad as Ambrus Budahazy defeated teammate Almos Balint in the final.

Ranked 31st in a field of 77, Budahazy won five of his six first round matches and ranked 13th for the knockout stages. He went on to beat  Gkikas (GRE) 15-13, Kaulakans (LAT) 15-6, Diestelkamp (GER) 15-7 and Zanardo (ITA) 15-9 to make the semi-finals. A 15-13 victory over Jaimie Cook (GBR) sealed his place in the final.

Meanwhile teammate Almos Balint made his way through the field and defeated Numa Crist (FRA) 15-10 to make it an all-Hungarian final.

In the final, Budahazy built up a 9-6 lead going into the first break. Brilliant attacks into preparation and incredibly late changes of line took him to the European title 15-7.
