Celebrating the Opening of the Youth ECH in Naples

The European Fencing Confederation (EFC) is thrilled to announce the commencement of the European Youth Championships at the prestigious PalaVesuvio from the 22nd to the 29th of February 2024. This continental event marks the beginning of the journey towards the Paris Olympics and the path leading to Napoli as the European Capital of Sport in 2026. Over a thousand athletes from over 40 countries will grace the stage, showcasing their skills and determination in the timeless art of fencing.

President of the European Fencing Confederation, Giorgio Scarso, emphasized the importance of young athletes embracing the Championship as a journey of personal growth. He encouraged fencers to showcase pride and honor while representing their countries, recognizing the vital role of coaches in guiding and training them. Scarso expressed gratitude to Federations for their dedication to promoting and expanding fencing, as well as appreciation for the Italian Fencing Federation and the local organizing committee for hosting the Championships. He thanked the city of Naples, Ministry of Sport, NOC, and sports authorities for their unwavering support and acknowledged the crucial contributions of the technical directorate, referees, and other commissions. Additionally, Scarso recognized the families' support in the athletes' pursuits and expressed gratitude towards the Italian Armed forces and police forces for their assistance. He concluded by wishing success to all competitors, underscoring the significance of respecting rules and opponents.

The Mayor of Naples, Gaetano Manfredi, officially declared the event open, underlining the significance of hosting a youthful competition that brings together aspiring fencers from all over the Europe. He emphasized the role of sport as a tool for peace and unity, resonating deeply with the spirit of Naples. The local authorities have shown unwavering support for the event, recognizing its importance for the city.

Acknowledging the invaluable contribution of the armed forces to the growth and development of athletes, General Claudio Minghetti commended the values instilled by fencing, such as respect for opponents and upholding dignity above all else. As a military officer, he shared his personal connection to the sport, having practiced fencing during his time at the military academy and finding joy in witnessing the younger generation engage in this noble pursuit.
