EFC Celebrates European Fencer's Achievements

12 February 2024

As the Olympic qualification period for Paris 2024 is well underway, the European Fencing Confederation (EFC) is committed to standing with European fencers and supporting them in their Olympic journeys. The year kicked off with the Grand Prix for men's and women's epee in Doha. Throughout the past weekend, we witnessed more exciting competitions across the globe: men's and women's foil in Turin, women's epee in Barcelona, men's saber in Tbilisi, and women's saber in Lima. These competitions showcased the tremendous achievements and joy of European athletes.

Before diving into the details, let's take a moment to proudly acknowledge the remarkable success of Yuval Freilich, who emerged victorious in Doha. We had the opportunity to sit down with him right after his competition and gain some valuable insights which we would like to share with you.

Freilich's outstanding gold medal victory in Doha marked a significant milestone in his quest for Olympic qualification. Determined to accumulate crucial points for the Olympics, Freilich expressed his focus and determination from the outset. Throughout the competition, he displayed accuracy, consistency, and unwavering focus, overcoming numerous formidable adversaries.

A Battle with Yannick Borel:

Reflecting on his toughest bout in Doha, Freilich highlighted his encounter with Yannick Borel, a four-time individual European Champion from France: "All the bouts were very difficult, given the focus and effort that every fencer puts in. However, fencing against Yannick Borel adds an extra physical aspect, making it even more challenging. Every touch is a real battle, both mentally and physically. He is such a strong fencer and makes it incredibly difficult to score, which is why he is one of the legends of the sport."

Freilich humbly attributes his success not only to his individual efforts but also to the support of his dedicated team and those around him. Recognizing the importance of various elements aligning simultaneously, Freilich expresses gratitude for the synergy that emerged during the Doha competition. The combination of mental, technical, and tactical aspects aligned perfectly, leading to his remarkable performance on the grand stage.

With three more critical competitions remaining in the Olympic qualification period, Freilich remains resolute in his pursuit of securing his spot in Paris 2024. He states, "As we know, anything can happen in epee fencing, so I will prepare in the same way and do everything within my control to achieve the best results I can. I don't have the privilege of taking my foot off the gas, so I will continue working until the qualification period is closed."

The success of Yuval offers inspiration to aspiring athletes across Europe. As the Olympic qualification period progresses, the EFC stands alongside European fencers, commending their unwavering dedication and infectious enthusiasm. We eagerly anticipate the remaining competitions and wish all our athletes continued triumph and success as they strive to fulfill their Olympic dreams.

As the European Fencing Confederation (EFC), our dedication remains steadfast in keeping you up-to-date with the accomplishments of European athletes. Stay tuned for more updates and highlights on their inspiring performances.
