Team France – Wael Abdeljalil, Anas Anane, Eliot Chagnon and Adrien Spichiger, battled through the 18-team field to secure France’s 2nd gold.
Entering the competition ranked 3rd in the world, France had a BYE in the round of 32. They went on to defeat Türkey 45-29, Denmark 45-28 and Hungary 45-30 to advance to the grand final.
Their opponents, Poland – Adam Jakubowski, Piotr Kaskow, Jakub Kotek and Mateusz Kwiatkowski – entered the competition ranked 4th and also they had a BYE through the round of 32. After a series of hard-fought battles against Spain 45-40, Slovakia 45-41 and 1st-ranked Italy 45-44, Poland was up for the battle of gold.
Throughout the final France remained in the driver’s seat after an early 10-8 lead in the second bout. They stretched the lead for every bout and ultimately became world champions after a 45-36 score. In the bronze match, team Hungary – Albert Bagdany, Ambrus Budahazy, Mattia Rubin and Gergo Szemes - defeated reigning champions Italy 45-41 to claim the medal after an impressive 10-3 win by Gergo Szemes in the final bout.
