HUNGARY CLAIM WOMEN’S TEAM SABRE EUROPEAN TITLE

U23 WOMEN’S TEAM SABRE REPORT

The Hungarian Women’s Sabre team claimed the last of the women’s European titles at the 2022 Championships in Tallinn today.

Katinka Battai, Kira Keszei, Anna Spiesz and Luca Szucs lined up for number three seeds Hungary who had a bye through the round of 16. They went on to beat Georgia 45-24 and France 45-28 to make the final.

In the other half of the draw saw Spain edged Germany 45-42 for their place in the gold medal. France (Faustine Clapier, Cyrielle Girardin, Anne Poupinet and Coline Suzanne) went on to beat Germany 45-42 in the bronze medal play-off.

Spain started the gold medal match with Elena Hernandez Munoz, Ainhoa Perez Zurutuza and Maria Venture with Itziar Gallardo in reserve whilst Hungary began with Spiez on the bench and led 15-11 after three legs. Spain closed the gap over the middle third of the match but trailed 30-27 with three bouts remaining. A phenomenal final leg saw Hernandez Munoz score eleven hits but Battai secured the European crown for Hungary, finishing things off with a 45-42 win.
