Romanian gold in Team Men’s Sabre competition

Team Romania – Casian Cidu, Vlad Covaliu, Mihnea Enache and Radu Nitu – battled through a field of 17 teams to claim the gold medal in Team Men’s Sabre, the first  Romanian gold of the championships.

Romania entered the competition ranked 4th and had a BYE in the round of 32. They reached the final by beating Ukraine 45-26, Bulgaria 45-32 and Italy 45-31.

Their opponents, team Hungary  entered as 6th seed and came to the final through wins over Azerbaijan 45-31, France 45-42 and Spain 45-39.

The final was even until the 5th bout, where an impresive 5-0 win from Radu Nitu extended the Romanian lead from 4 points to 9, 25-16. The Romaniam team continued with their solid fencing and eventually clinched the gold 45-31. In the bronze match, Spain overcame the strong Italian team 45-39 to claim the medal, the second of Spain in these championships.
