10 March 2022

CADET WOMEN’S SABRE REPORT

Hungary’s Anna Spiezs claimed the final individual Cadet title in Novi Sad finishing on top of the Women’s Sabre field of 57.

Winning all of her first round fights meant she was top seed for the knockout stages. That earned her a bye through the round of 64 and she went on to beat Turkey’s Begum Alkaya  15-12 and Alara Cermen 15-4, plus Roxane Chabrol (FRA) 15-8 to make the top four. A comfortable 15-5 win over Tiziana Nitschmann (GER) meant a shot at the European title in the final.

The other half of the draw saw a semi-final contest between Martina Giancola (ITA) and Maria Alexe (ROU) which the Italian won 15-10.

More decisive off the line, Spiesz went 4-0 up which she converted to an 8-4 lead at the break. The Hungarian’s dominance in the middle allowed her to remain in almost complete control of the fight. She became a deserving European Champion with a 15-7 victory.

The result meant that Hungary claimed three of the six Cadet European individual titles.
