U23 WOMEN’S FOIL REPORT
French fencer Eva Lacheray claimed the Women’s Foil European Championship title in Tallinn, Estonia on the first day of the individual competition hosted at the Tallink Tennis Centre.
The field of 39 saw Lacheray win all of her first-round matches earning top seed for the knockout stages. A bye through the incomplete round of 32 was followed by victories over Dinca (ROU) 15-4 and Marechal (FRA) 15-5 giving her a place in the semi-finals. Lacheray then saw off her teammate Alice Recher, but only just 14-13, for her place in the final.
The other half of the draw featured a semi-final contest between Aliya Dhuique-Hein (GER) and Serena Rossini (ITA). The German defeated the 2019 Junior European champion 15-7 for her place in the gold medal match.
Dhuique-Hein began the final doing all of the pressing, but Lacheray contained her well at the beginning of the first period only to be pegged back to lead just 9-8 at the break. Lacheray came out for the second period fully of attacking intent which led her to a 15-10 victory and the European title.
