ANTALYA TO HOST CHAMPIONSHIPS FULL OF HOPE AND PROMISE
One month today sees the start of the 2022 European Championships in Turkey’s Turquoise Seaside resort, Antalya. After a two-year absence due to the global pandemic, there is an air of hope and promise about the competition and a feeling that truly competitive fencing has returned.
No fewer than nine Tokyo 2020 Olympic medalists will be in action in the individual events including Hungary’s three-time Olympic gold medalist, Aron Szilagyi, who will be amongst the favourites in the men’s sabre event. Italy’s Alice Volpi has claimed three circuit victories this season and is sure to feature in the women’s foil event. And all eyes will be on team France in the men’s epee competition and team Estonia in the women’s epee event.
Speaking about the event, EFC Secretary General, Jacek Slupski said, “The venue looks amazing and the local organisers are well on target to deliver a fantastic tournament. After the two year break we are very excited to finally be welcoming the athletes and teams to the European Championships again.”
For those unable to attend in person, the EFC is proud to announce that the event will be livestreamed every day, 16-22 June and links will follow closer to the Championships. In the meantime full event details including the schedule can be found on the official website, here.
Over the coming weeks we will provide more information about what to expect at the Championships including a preview of each weapon.
