With great sadness, the European Fencing Confederation (EFC) announces the passing of Mrs. Ana Pascu (MH, ROU) on April 6, 2022. Born on September 22, 1944, in Bucharest, Romania, Mrs. Ana Pascu was a member of the FIE Hall of Fame.
She represented Romania in five Olympic Games and won two bronze medals (1968, 1972) in foil team events. At World Championship she won the gold medal in Juniors in 1963, and thereafter, in Seniors she stepped on the podium seven times winning a gold medal in team foil at Havana in 1969, a silver medal in team foil in 1970 and five bronze medals in 1967, 1971, 1973, 1974 and 1975.
Her remarkable career as a high-performance athlete was followed by outstanding work as President of the Romanian Fencing Federation, Vice-President of the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee and last but not least, as Vice-President of the International Fencing Federation.
Decades over decades, Mrs. Ana Pascu mastered Romanian fencing in terms of strategy and development. Mrs. Ana Pascu holds the record for the longest-serving president of a Romanian sports federation, heading the Romanian Fencing Federation from 1982 until 2013 and contributing during her office to the winning by Romanian fencing athletes of 134 medals: 9 in Olympics, 57 in World Championships and 68 in European Championships.
At international level, Mrs. Ana Pascu was a distinguished member of the International Fencing Federation serving on the Rules Commission between 1984 and 1988, on the Refereeing Commission between 1988 and 1996, on the Executive Committee between 1996 and 2004 and as a Vice-President between 2004 and 2021.
Mrs. Ana Pascu dedicated her entire life to sports and fencing, performing a remarkable number of functions and roles, and achieving outstanding results for fencing worldwide. She continually gave the best of herself and devoted her extraordinary talents to the cause of fencing.
The EFC and the sport of fencing overall have lost a great professional, one of its dearest members and a great friend who was appreciated, respected, and admired by all.
